Good Practice
Hiring migrants and refugees may appears challenging especially for small and medium enterprises with limited resources and specialistic knowledge. Existing good practices and core principles already developed by other local organisations can provide an inspiring and helpful source to improve your organisaton’s inclusivity and to access and retain talent.
RE:Store Case Study
Nurses and other health professionals trained in other countries who now live in the UK are an enormous potential resource. This case study explores a project that helps refugee nurses and midwives to get ready to work in the NHS. Case study coming soon
University of Leeds Business School: Inclusive Policy
This is an example of a recent inclusive recruitment guide developed by the University of Leeds to support Hiring Managers and Departmental Managers to enable an inclusive approach to recruitment. Based on the Yorkshire Universities Inclusive Recruitment Guide (June 2023), it outlines procedures to ensure fair, inclusive and diverse hiring
Sector example: Care Workers
The social care sector in the UK has historically experienced hard to fill vacancies and more recently a highly flucutating migration enviroment. In this case study our partners from the Yorkshire and Humber International Recruitment Programme offer an overview of how the sector has been coping with policy change and skills shortages including key resources for employers in social care to keep abreast of change.

Immigration policies in the UK are subject to frequentchange hence there is no single repository for ultimate information beside the UK Government website. Here we offer some helpful links that help employers and third sector partners to keep up to date with policy and legislative change in the area of migrant and refugee employment.

In this mini guide for employers the Migration Yorkshire team ofers a summary of key principles and tips to legally hire migrant workers with and without the ability the use the “share code”.
Employment Act Guide
In 2025 the Government introduced a new legislation The Employment Rights Act including a series of changes that are relevant especially in sectors where migrants are found. This guide offers a summary and timeline of implementation of key changes around employer duties and statutory rights for workers including sick pay, zero-hour contracts, parental leave, unfair dismissal and union recognition. The guide also cover equality action plans for larger organizations.

Making strides: Refugees’ employment trajectories in Yorkshire and the Humber
This IPPR report is based on research with people who settled in Yorkshire and the Humber, many of them having previously worked in professional roles as diverse as the diplomatic service, nursing and IT – but who struggled to regain their careers since settling in the UK.
